Partner – Save the Children

This blog post is part of “20 Years, 20 Stories,” a series celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 60 million girls Foundation. Over the next eight months, we will share the stories of the people who have shaped our journey — volunteers, partners, donors, and the girls at the heart of our mission. We hope their voices inspire you as much as they inspire us.

In northern Mozambique, girls’ access to education is constrained by long distances to schools. This challenge becomes even more pronounced when girls transition to secondary education, where facilities are far more limited. As a result, only 14% of adult women have completed at least a secondary level of education, and illiteracy rates among women and girls remain extremely high, at nearly 70%.

Through its partnership with Save the Children, 60 Million Girls Foundation has played an important role in advancing access to education for girls in northern Mozambique. With the support of the Foundation’s innovative Mobile Learning Labs technology, we were able to reach girls in remote and hard-to-reach communities with high-quality and flexible learning opportunities. Because of the Foundation’s generosity, hundreds of girls and young women, particularly those who had previously dropped out of school, lived in remote areas, were pregnant or young mothers or had experienced child, early and forced marriage, were able to continue their secondary education.

Support from the 60 Million Girls Foundation was essential in improving girls’ access to education in northern Mozambique. Save the Children is grateful for the Foundation’s longstanding partnership and shared commitment to advancing girls’ rights and opportunities in Canada and around the world.
